What is NADA?

NADA is a simple form of standardized ear acupuncture where the same five points are used in each treatment. The method was developed in New York in the mid-1970s as a complement to treating withdrawal symptoms. Now, NADA is used not only in drug addiction treatment but also in other forms of mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. Research shows that NADA has a good effect on these symptoms, that staff appreciates NADA as a useful addition to other treatments, and that patients appreciate receiving NADA.

During NADA treatment, five sterile acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points in each ear, making the method simpel. The treatment is usually done on seated patients and preferably in groups, making NADA a cost- and time-effective treatment.

NADA is used as a complement in general psychiatric care (both in outpatient and inpatient care), in addiction care, in treatment homes, in the criminal justice system, and by private practitioners. Several aid organizations use NADA as crisis intervention and support for PTSD after disasters and wars. NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) is the organization that has led the development and worked to spread knowledge about the method. The NADA model is now used in more than 70 countries.
